A Tiny Glimpse Inside Life and Legacy of Burma’s Student Leader Salai Tin Maung Oo

You can kill my body but you can never kill my beliefs and what I stood for. I will never kneel down to your military boots! - Salai Tin Maung Oo

It was at 4pm early in the morning 33 years ago today that Burma's student leader, Salai Tin Maung Oo, was hanged inside the notorious Insein Prison in Rangoon by the Ne Win-led military authority called Burmese Socialist Programme Party.

Salai Tin Maung Oo, an ethnic Chin leader, was the first student in Burma to be officially hanged to death for organizing and leading student protests against the military regime. Remembered as Burma's first student martyr, Salai Tin Maung Oo was sentenced to death on 26th June, 1976 at the age of 25 for his political beliefs and selfless fight for democracy, justice and peace in Burma.

A true Salai, as described by his pal Salai Kipp Kho Lian, Tin Maung Oo, a Zoology student of Rangoon Arts and Science University, got actively involved in student movements and activities. Among many activities, he was best-known for leading two famous demonstrations: U Thant's funeral uprising on 5 December 1974 and the Shwedagon Strike on 6 June 1975.

While organising another uprising known as "Hmine Yar Pyih" (100th anniversary of the revolutionary Thakin Ko Daw Hmine), he was arrested on 22 March 1976 and killed within 3 months on 26 June 1976 without any fair trial and without any lawyer. Salai Tin Maung Oo's last words included: "Comrades, they are killing me secretly!"

His last words to the executioners remain famous and echo till today: "You [the military regime] can kill my body but you can never kill my beliefs and what I stood for. I will never kneel down to your military boots!"

The Chin student leader was forced to apologise for what he was doing to General Ne Win in exchange for clemency but he refused and was subsequently hanged at Insein Prison, according to Moe Thee Zun of All Burma Students' Democratic Front in Cries from Insein published in 1996.

Mai Po Po, Salai Tin Maung Oo's sister, recalled: "Ko Tin Maung Oo was in his early teenage years when he began to express his grief regarding the dynamite explosion of the Students' Union building in 1962. As he grew up, he became more aware of the injustices surrounding him, particularly those caused by the Burmese military government. Evidently he felt strongly compelled to do something about these injustices."

"Thus, when he became a 1st-year university student in 1971, majoring in Zoology, he became actively involved in the Students' Underground Movement," added his sister who, along with her parents and two brothers, was also arrested and imprisoned in Insein Prison from 1976 until 1980.

For the 1974-1975 academic year, Salai Tin Maung Oo was elected General Secretary of CLCC (Chin Literature and Cultural Committee) after being introduced at the meeting by his prison cellmate and at that time a medical student Dr. Za Hlei Thang and giving a moving speech on the importance of unity especially during critical times.

Ko Kyaw Zwa of Burmese Muslim Association, whose father Maung Maung Lwin was not only a cellmate of Salai Tin Maung Oo in Insein Prison but also a close friend until his death, said: "Salai Tin Maung Oo is a symbol of the students fighting for injustice in Burma. Brave and determined, he was one of our heroes who paved the way in our fight for democracy and freedom against the military regime."

Salai Tin Maung Oo had been described as being 'brave, courageous, focused, kind, caring and peace-loving' by his friends, colleagues and many writers. Mai Po Po said one of his most outstanding qualities was his insatiable generosity, and he was such a giver and would help others including any friends and family members.

Due to his activities with the Students' Underground Movement, Salai Tin Maung Oo would quite often come home late, according to his sister, who added: "I still recall one day in particular when he came home late and my mother talked to him very seriously saying, 'My son, I worried about you so much and even shed tears for you.'"

"My brother Ko Tin Maung Oo replied, 'I am really sorry that I made you worry and cry for me. Mom, there are many mothers who also shed tears for their sons and daughters who will never come home because the military government killed them. Some sons and daughters are in prison, too. I want to wipe the tears away from the eyes of those mothers.' I remember, every time he came home late, he would pick two wild flowers from the backyard and give them to my mother. I guess he did this to comfort my mom."

Salai Dr. Pachin, a comrade of Salai Tin Maung Oo during U Than's funeral student uprising was quoted as saying that he is truly a martyr and we must never forget that he had given his life for the cause of democracy and freedom not only for the Chins but for all the people of Burma.

An email by Htun Aung Kyaw, who worked hand-in-hand with Salai Tin Maung Oo and promised to continue the struggle until the democratic system is established in Burma, said: "He was a great hero and true 'Salai'. We must carry his legacy. He stood for his belief and kept his dignity till the end." One verse in the email read:

Salute our fallen brothers and sisters!
Long live the spirit of 'fighting peacock'!
The revolution of the generation will strike back again.
Ko Tin Maung Oo will live forever in our hearts.

A memorial service and demonstration especially led and organised by Burmese students in commemoration of Salai Tin Maung Oo has long been held across the world. In his memory, an education centre was established in 2006 to provide free tuitions to Burmese refugee children in New Delhi, India.

In the history of political movement and struggle for democracy in Burma, Salai Tin Maung Oo was and will be respected and remembered as a highflying hornbill and ‘big lion’ for his democratic spirit and loyalty, selfless leadership and fight against injustice, and undaunted love and support for peace and freedom.

In reality, Mai Po Po continued, my brother Tin Maung Oo's last words ‘You can never kill my beliefs and what I stood for’ is really true. “How so? It shows in the fact there was the 1988 Uprising and the 2007 Saffron Uprising. These events show that until the dawn of true democracy in Burma, there will always be those who, like Brother Ko Tin Maung Oo, will strive for freedom and justice and peace,” added the sister, who is currently living with her aging parents in Canada.

Salai Ko Tin Maung Oo was born on November 9th, 1951 in the township of Taungoo to Asho-Chin parents, Salai U Hla Din and Mai Daw Hnin Myaing. He spent his early schooldays in Thamaing. Being interested in sports, he started weight-lifting at the age of 13, won several high school swimming competitions and was selected as the best swimmer at school. Being good at judo and karate, he could also play the violin very well and was an avid reader.

Myanmar court grants Suu Kyi 1 more witness, 1st Ld, AS

Tuesday June 9 2009
YANGON, Myanmar (AP) A Myanmar court has reinstated one of three barred defense witnesses in the trial of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Lawyers for Suu Kyi immediately said they would appeal the Tuesday decision by Yangon's Divisional Court in efforts to have all three testify at her trial.

The ruling partly reversed a lower court decision to disqualify all but one witness in the trial that has sparked global outrage.

Suu Kyi faces five years in prison if convicted of violating the terms of her lengthy house arrest.

The case revolves around an American man who swam secretly to her closely guarded lakeside home and stayed two days.

Critics say Myanmar's military rulers are using the case as an excuse to keep Suu Kyi locked up.

Junta extends military camps near Chin state border

The Burmese military junta has been extending its military camps in Paletwa, in Chin State, Western Burma.
SPDC news army camp in Palatwa Township

According to local reports, Sittwe based IB 34 battalion in Rakhaing state and Paletwa based LIB 289 battalion have extended tow military camps at Kintalin, and Utalin villages during the first week of April 2009.

"They have extended military camps for security concerns. The reasons maybe to prevent the opposition party’s activities like the No Vote Campaign, objections to hanging posters in Chin state, for the forthcoming 2010 general elections. The government therefore is getting ready to prevent such activities before the 2010 elections, by extending military camps," a local person said.

In fact, earlier the authorities had arrested at least two people, who had pasted posters regarding objections to the Referendum in 2008, just before it was held in Shinletwa village, Paletwa Township.

Currently, the total number of military camps is about 20 in Paletwa Township. These camps are located in Meihwa, Suilaingpui, Ungtiwa, Duchawngwa, Ngapui, Shinletwa, Kuantaung, Tru Aing, Daletme, Lapahwa, Tawngpyo, Sepitpin, Kuwah, Sami, Pikung, Sin u wa and Kuantaung villages. Besides, the government is constructing a helipad in Tru Aing village.

Due to this extension of military camps, the local people are being forced to work as labourers for digging the ground, fencing and constructing military camps.

The Burmese military government has highlighted Chin State as a black area after the revolutions in 1988, so they have plans of extending military camps to about 50.

Meanwhile, the military personnel are torturing the local people in different ways and they are also violating human rights, so that most of the Chin people are fleeing to neighboring countries daily. Khonumthung News

The fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in Mr. Mya Win’s home. He is a Myo Thit block in Tamu town on the Indo-Myanmar border. The fire ignited explosives arms and ammunition stored in the house.

A report said that Mya Win’s house was rented by Mr. Jonny who is a member of the Meitei underground insurgent group. He was staying with his two followers in the house. Jonny and one of his followers have been arrested by the LIB in Tamu district while another has fled.

“As far as I know they had rented the house seven years ago. I don’t know how much they paid for it. I heard the sound of a big explosion just before I got up. At the same time I heard someone shouting ‘don’t move, hide and don’t go outside’. This was followed by more explosions,” said a local.

Splinters from the explosion hit Mr. Kyaw Soe as he and his friend Mr. Win Min were rushing to the scene of the fire. Kyaw Soe is from the Gorkhali tribe.

“Kyaw Soe has lost one of his arms and he received serious injuries on the leg and has been admitted to hospital,” he added.

One of the burnt houses of the six was used as a candle factory. The fore spread and burnt everything. Fortunately it was raining just before the fire broke out preventing further damage. Only two fire engines could arrive in time. Khonumthung News

Kalemyo authorities refuse Christians permission to construct churches

Christians in Kalemyo are disappointed and frustrated because they have been unable to get permission from the Burmese military junta authorities to construct churches.

There are about 100 different Christian religious organizations in Kalemyo, western Burma. Most of the church members cannot afford a permit for church construction so they have rented private houses and turned them into places of worship. Meanwhile, the authorities also have not allowed renovation of existing churches in Kalemyo.

"We had submitted an application for a church construction permit to the authorities 10 years ago. We have not got any response from their side till today. We are renting private houses as places of worship. Other religious sects are also facing a similar situation," a member of the Seven Day Church said.

Some groups, who have no churches as well as no permission to construct churches, are going around from one house to another every week. The authorities are likely to give permission for construction of churches if they are paid Kyat 20 lakh.

"There are around 50 churches in Tamu Township. Of these some churches, have many members and if they can pay Kyat 20 lakh to the authorities, then they can construct their own church. A church, which has fewer members, cannot do the same so they are renting private houses at a high cost," a local church leader said.

Similarly, the authorities earlier used to issue permission annually to Christian churches in Chin state and Rangoon city. But, without renewal of the permit they cannot do anything.

"We have to give an annual report to the township authorities, otherwise we cannot open our bible school," said a head teacher of the Christian Bible School in Rangoon city. - Khonumthung News

Military collects funds for pagoda by brewing alcohol

The Burmese Army is collecting funds for a pagoda being built in Lungler village, Than Tlang Township, Chin state western Burma by brewing and selling alcohol locally.
The pagoda has to be constructed by the army’s Lungler based unit on the orders of the Hakha based Light Infantry (LIB) 266. Construction work started from the first week of April. And now they are trying to raise the money for construction by brewing and selling alcohol.

"The military produces alcohol locally and sells it to local people. Though it claims that the money is to be spent for constructing a pagoda, we don't know what they are spending it on. In fact, we have been ordered to construct the pagoda without being paid wages," said a local.

The junta sanctions Kyat 50 lakhs to the Home Ministry as the annual budget for the Buddhist mission, said an official of the Home Department in Than Tlang town. The military is selling its alcohol to youths. Sometimes they order the youths to sell it in Mizoram state, India.

"The cost of the alcohol is Kyat 1000 a bottle. They hire five horses at Kyat 3,000, when the actual hire charges are Kyat 5,000 a horse, for selling alcohol in Mizoram. They will not use the money made from alcohol sales for the pagoda. It is likely to be funds for the military camp. We, the local people work daily for the pagoda, so we know," a youth said..

Meanwhile Christian church leaders in Than Tlang town are trying to eradicate alcohol consumption in Chin state by keeping the alcohol license every year.

Likewise, religious leaders in Hakha and Falam town are taking the initiative to stop local alcohol consumption in their respective areas. - Khonumthung News

Christian Cross Destroyed To Be Replaced With Pagoda

Chinland Guardian

A Christian cross planted on the top of Kimo mountain in Paletwa Township, Chin State was pulled down in March, 2009 and is to be replaced with a Buddhist pagoda by the military regime, sources unveiled.

The cross, which was jointly erected on the summit by a group of Christian denominations in the region, was removed by a group of people with High School Principal after Township Peace and Development Council (TPDC) made an order, according to Khonumthung News.

A church leader was quoted as saying that the cross was built with donations from the churches on top of the mountain where a prayer service is held once a year. The cross was destroyed without our knowledge, added the leader.

After the destruction, the authorities ordered the local people to clean up the place so a pagoda construction could begin at the same place.

Benedict Rogers, East Asia Team Leader of Christian Solidarity Worldwide, told Chinland Guardian: "This incident is typical of the regime’s behaviour towards Chin Christians. Over the years it has deliberately destroyed Christian symbols in Chin State, in order to denigrate the Chin people’s identity and culture. The regime is hostile to Chin Christians for religious and ethnic reasons. It is one of the world’s worst violators of religious freedom, and it is time that such persecution of religious minorities is stopped."

"British MPs have called on the UN Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Religion and Belief to investigate violations of religious freedom, and we continue to make that call," added author of Carrying the cross: the military regime's campaign of restriction, discrimination and persecution against Christians in Burma, which detailed the regime's 17-point document headlined 'Programme to destroy the Christian religion in Burma' under which the first point reads: ‘There shall be no home where the Christian religion is practised’.

CSW’s report published in 2007 said that in addition to the destruction of crosses and churches, and restriction on the construction of new churches, the SPDC regularly and deliberately disrupts church services, physically assaults pastors and church leaders, and uses pastors for forced labour, particularly on Sundays.

A series of cross demolition perpetrated by Burma's military dictatorship has been recorded throughout Chin State since early 1990s.

A large number of supporters of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, currently facing trial inside the notorious Insein prison court, has flocked near the Insien prison in a show of solidarity on Monday, according to a member of the National League for Democracy (NLD).

Pu Cin Sian Thang, chairman of the Zomi National Congress (ZNC) and NLD central committee member Win Tin also reportedly came to the Insein prison in a show of solidarity but later left as they have party meetings.

Similarly, Naw Ohn Hla and women from Rangoon and Mandalay have also arrived near the Insein prison to “show solidarity” with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and are waiting near the prison, where the road has been blocked.

Lawyers of Aung San Suu Kyi were seen entering the Insein prison at about 10 a.m (local time), as the court is about to convene the sixth-day of hearing against Aung San Suu Kyi, where her defence councils are to cross examine witnesses.

Though the prosecution has submitted 23 witnesses, it does not include the names of security officials, who are guarding the residence of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Chin people pray for Suu Kyi’s freedom

People of Chin State in western Burma have been praying daily in churches, monasteries and other places of worship, for Aung San Suu Kyi’s freedom.
Chin People are praying for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.The people are very worried about the Junta’s stand on Suu Kyi and are doing whatever they can to pray for her freedom.

“There are 35 churches in Falam Town. We used to have prayers for political prisoners once a week. However, currently, we are all praying in churches and monasteries for Draw Aung San Suu Kyi, as she has been illegally arrested and her trial is unjust,” a member of the Falam Baptist Church said.

Chin women are also very worried for Suu Kyi. “Indeed, we are totally dependent upon Daw Suu Kyi for the prosperity of our country. At the same time, we are worried about her life as she can be killed like her father. We, therefore always pray for her,” a Chin woman told Khonumthung News.

Although there are no hindrances or obstructions by the authorities, as far as the prayer ceremonies of the Chin people are concerned, yet some people in plainclothes have been keeping a watch on all events, a local from Kalemyo said.

Similarly, people in Tamu Township are also praying for Suu Kyi. Aizawl-based Burmese Christians have starved for a day on 25 May, 2009, including members of four different churches and all members numbering about hundred. In fact, they used to hold such prayers every week in May for the freedom of political prisoners..

“Although we are staying in Mizoram State, India, we prayed for the Burmese people and democracy for the country, as well as for the freedom of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. On this occasion many women also participated,” a church leader in Aizawl City, Mizoram State said. - Khonumthung News

September-October. SLORC leaders meet with Suu Kyi, who still asks for a public dialogue.
1995: July 10. SLORC releases Suu Kyi from house arrest after six years of detention.

In the last four years her movements have still been restricted. While she has had some opportunities to telephone her family in England, she is regularly denounced in the government-controlled media, and there is concern for her personal safety. Efforts to revive any NLD party activities have been balked, and its members have been jailed and physically attacked. In the first months after detention was ended, she was able to speak to large gatherings of supporters outside her home, but this was stopped. Yet her popularity in the country has not diminished.

Internationally her voice has been heard not infrequently. Reporters with cameras and videotape have been able to interview her in person, and telephone interviews with the media outside Burma have also been published. Using video cassettes she has sent out statements, including the keynote address to the NGO Forum at the U.N. International Women's Conference in Beijing in August 1995.

There have been a number of visitors from abroad, including a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, whom she told that Norway will be the first country she will visit when free to travel. SLORC has changed its name to the State Peace and Development Council, but its repressive policies and violation of human rights continue unabated.

Suu Kyi discourages tourists from visiting Burma and businessmen from investing in the country until it is free. She finds hearing for such pleas among western nations, and the United States has applied economic sanctions against Burma, but Burma's neighbours follow their policy of not intervening in the internal affairs of other sovereign states, and Burma has been admitted into the Association of South Eastern Asian Nations.

On March 27, 1999, Michael Aris died of prostate cancer in London. He had petitioned the Burmese authorities to allow him to visit Suu Kyi one last time, but they had rejected his request. He had not seen her since a Christmas visit in 1995. The government always urged her to join her family abroad, but she knew that she would not be allowed to return. This separation she regarded as one of the sacrifices she had had to make in order to work for a free Burma.
